Frequently Asked Questions
How do I make an appointment?
Click the button above for our online appointment booking site to see our availability and book a time that works for your schedule. Please arrive at the guidance office at the time of your appointment.
Will I be marked absent from class?
If you are meeting with a counsellor, we will always send you back to class with a note for your teacher. This is still school programming and you will not be marked absent. You are responsible for catching up on any missed work by talking to your teacher and classmates.
What happens in counselling?
You will speak with a trained school counsellor who will assess your concerns, help guide you through problem solving, provide you with practical support and advice, and discuss next steps. This may include brief solution-focused counselling, referrals to outside agencies (within the school or outside of school in the community), meeting with teachers and/or parents, workshops or one appointment may be all you need!
How long are counselling sessions?
Sessions are usually 30 minutes during regular school hours. The main focus of our work is short-term support and problem solving of personal and academic concerns. We do not provide long term counseling but we can help you find an appropriate agency and assist with the referral. Alternative times such as during lunch break can be arranged as well as online video calls through Office 365 Teams for the days that you are distance learning from home.
What if I need more frequent counselling?
If you think you would benefit from more frequent or longer term support, we can discuss options to get help from a long-term counsellor.
